2017 Mackinac Race – As of 12:00 AM – July 18 – Richard Predicts 2nd Place for Bill

Latest Update

was the hardest most grueling race I’ve ever been on. I was sick and couldn’t stand my watch for 8 hours. That’s never happened. Almost 100 boats did not complete the race.

The #3 (ed note: the smallest front sail on the boat) from Turning Point blew out after a couple hours but I had anticipated this and brought the #3 from Corsair (which was a new Dacron sale about 20% smaller than the Benateau’s) and we finished the 125 mile upwind part with no problem from the sail.

Everyone was sick to some degree. One guy smacked his head and another may have a small fracture in his ulnar. The upwind leg became survival.

Still recovering (wine in hand).    Bill

Turning Point made an amazing comeback finishing only 45 minutes behind first place to finish 45 minutes befor 3rd place.. Two days ago, they were 4 hours behind…

10:30 PM – July 16, Bill is in 4th place in his division.. 57th in the overall race.. 100th boat to the finish line.. 98.9 miles to finish.. his coordinates are 44 48.84N 086 16.97 W.. heading NE which is parallel with the lay line.. speed is 6.1 in @ 54 degrees..

The book makers predict a 3rd place (show)finish. As of July 17, the odds are now for 2nd (place)

The Turning Point crew before the barf fest…

Bill, that sounds absolutely harrowing. And how smart of you to bring the #3 sail from the Corsair! I can’t imagine you so sick that you couldn’t do your watch for 8 hours; that really gives me perspective on what a grueling race this was (that and the fact that almost 100 boats dropped out!) Can’t wait to hear more specifics! Big congratulations on a job well done!

Sometimes on a boat, sea sickness is a chain reaction.. as others are feeding the fishes, one starts thinking about it and BLAM it happens…

Wow awesome!! Can’t even imagine that!! Congratulations on Bill’s impressive performance and finish!!!!

  3. avatar Janis says:

Bravo, and congratulations Cpt. B! Tough race, and excellent second place victory! Plus Richard really seemed to have a feel for the events as the race went along (which is why former professional ball players make the best commentators!)

I came to the website to ask if there was any word from Bill. Heard on the radio that the race was done and they named the first place boat. They also said that 200 boats made it to the finish, out of 300 at the start. Hooray for Bill!

    July 17 – 2:15 PM

Turning Point is now in 2nd place with the wind behind them and probably flying the spinnaker… unless the lead boat sinks, breaks a mast, gets becalmed with a strong wind for the rest or makes a dumb tactical decision … TP should take 2nd or possibly 3rd.

This will call for major celebration. Too bad Richard is bailing on us this summer. I think he’s just trying to avoid Patti and me in our stunning outfits. But take heed! High fashion is not just for summertime!

      • avatar Richard says:

but at least in winter you will both be cocooned up like Nanook of the North..

      • PattiB PattiB says:

A first place for Bill would have been a lock if Sue and I were allowed to crew wearing our outfits!
Congrats to the Commodore for a job well done!

        • avatar Richard says:

You could turn them into a spinnaker.. made from shower curtains and old window curtains.. it would make all the competitors run away because of “guilt through association”..

      Way to go Bill!

Last I heard, 29 boats had dropped out of the race. Good for Bill that he’s still in it!
